13 Historical and Mysterious Monuments

 People that lived thousands years before us, sometimes created structures that simply striking imagination. So massive that scientists during hundreds of years breaking their heads to find out by whom and for what, but most important – how they were erected. And they proposed the most different theories, down to unearthly and mystical.

  1. Stonehenge, England

   According to epos, stone complex was erected by wizard Merlin. In reality Stonehenge arose way before hypothetical time of living of king’s Arthur companion. But how did people transported unelectable blocks from quarry founded hundred kilometers away? Not so clear the purpose of structure as well: was that the observatory (arrangement of megalith – exact model of solar system) or a sanctuary (particularly it was used by Celtic priests – Druids).

  1. Baalbek, Libya

   The pearl of ruins that was at some point a bloomed city is temple ensemble in antique style. The only thing is that Romans did not posses technology that would allow installing stone blocks weighted up to 1000 tons (those are particularly located in the base). To compare: Athena’s Parthenon is two times  smaller than Libyan giant and the biggest block of Great Pyramid weighting  90 tons “only”. The contribution for creation of foundation was assigned to either to Egyptians or the giants at all. But some think that it could be the base of Babylonian tower.

  1. New Grange, Ireland

    Although, the road builders accidentally stumbled upon the monument in 17th century, its study started only three hundred years later. As result of digging, the mound was open to the eyes: ideally rounded with impressive diameter and older than Egyptian pyramids. In the center archeologists found thumb. Standing there at the time of solstice you can see real astronomical phenomena – how the beam of light gradually fills the entire chamber.  Celtic superstitions stating that this place is the entrance to country of elves and fairies.

  1. Caucasus dolmens, Russia

   On the slopes of the mountains are scattered houses that are stacked from flat stones. On the façade is the opening that closes with the plug. Such fact is surprising: the weight of the plate is calculated by tons but they are fitted so precisely that the blade of the knife cannot be squeezed between them. Thus the age of the artifact is almost five thousand years. Some monuments, for example, Volkonskoy became famous for its healing features. Interesting, that “dolmen tradition” is traced in different corners of the Earth.

  1. Tikal, Guatemala

   One of the biggest sites of ancient settlement is hidden in green jungle. Here are artificial ponds and field for playing a ball and castles. But special attention is given to pyramids that forming the squares of the city. They were built by the laws of particular time, according to the periods of its development. There are lots of theories about their functions: cultural structures, scientific centers, cemeteries or all of that. Etymology of the name “Tikal” is unclear also. But there is more obvious “nickname” – the City of voices.  Because, even the whisper there echoes loudly.

  1. Big Zayatskiy Labirynth, Russia

   The islands of Solovetsky Archipelago embellished with fantastical stoned lace – labyrinths with spiral form. The local people call them “Babylonians”. There is one entrance and exit, in other words when walking strictly on wheel tracks, formed by boulder, than after sometime can exit  at same spot where came in. But what was it before? Some scientists are writing about practicality: the trap for fish. Another – about entertainment: place for circle dances and games. But most are ensured: those are ritual structures on border to the other world.

   Petra, Jordan

   Monumental “nest” is hidden right on the cliff 900 meters high above the sea level. The craftsmen had to show uncommon patience grinding from them the beauties of Petra. So, at the end of chilly canyon Syd opens fantastic view to the front with columns and porches – El Hazne (translated from Arabic – “treasury”). Perhaps, temple or maybe mausoleum. The challenge with many unknown – to understand how the grinders worked. Because it could not be made without scaffolds, but those were not available.

   Stone spheres, Costa Rica

   Prehistoric petro spheres from Pacific coast almost became a victim of vandalism: the workers that founded them believed that gold was hidden inside. One way or another, artifacts was damaged anyway: to attract tourists, they were mounted at the city squares. Because of constant relocation the exact dating is impossible. The theory of their origin under the influence of water turned out to be untenable. And, after all, what is it: symbols of planets, marking of boundaries? It is assumptions without the proof.

   Terracotta army, China

   Mausoleum Tsin Shihuandi stores more than 8,000 statues of Chinese warriors and horses. They were buried together with the ruler against tradition – instead of people and animals. Handmade army 200 years B.C. was executed in natural size with the smallest details, none of the faces repeated. At the time of digging (they go on since 1970) people suppose to work very carefully. Among other things, the purpose for safety is due to old time prediction: emperor was supposed to be followed to the other side by the rivers of mercury.

   Angkor Wat, Cambodia

   Europeans did not know about the complex until 19th century. When found out, they doubted that it was built by Khmers. The stacking is very tight: seams are undetectable sometimes. Stones are extremely smooth. The constructions are held under its own weight. Ensemble in total of 200 temples was planned in a way that coming closer traveler sees only three of them. Especially incredible view in the rain season: wide trench filled with water makes Angkor Wat looking like an island amidst endless ocean.

   Timbuktu, Mali

   According to the story, city aroused because of old woman Buktu and her dwell were hospitably greeting the caravans. It was the grand hero of medieval fables: the streets in gold and wise men… The brave men that were trying to conquer African Eldorado did not return back, until French man Rene Calie did not pretend to be a pilgrim. How surprised he was when he saw a poor small city with adobe buildings. So now, unique architecture of mosques is attracting the lovers of adventures.

   Statues of Easter Island, Chili

   Small piece of dry land in the waters of Pacific Ocean studded with gigantic moa. There is information that they were relocated from place to place and turn upside down. Also ritual chocks are presented that are many times heavier then idols itself. Unfortunately, descendants that could shed the light have died long time ago because of the slave-traders. There is only one way to uncover the mysteries of the island – directly turn to the silent idols. But experiments confirmed only that all manipulations with them are possible as such.

   Great Sphinx, Egypt

   Colossal sculpture among the sands – perhaps, the biggest mystery. It was considered to be made by pharaohs. But they only restored Sphinx. Its body reminiscent of lion’s is corroded. When sharing the most daring assumptions, than those are the traces of Great flood. Another strange thing is that the head is obviously contradicts to the proportions. In addition, it turned out that inside and beneath of the giant is rooms. Attempts to study them leaded to either accidents or restrictions form government. Is it possible that it is not the guardian of desert but of some secretive knowledge that remained, for example, after sunken Atlantis?
